The Baseball Trip 2018

Day 8  Monday, July 9, 2018

San Francisco is less than 70 miles, and yet it took us four hours or more to get there. We took Highway 1, which follows the coast along rocky cliffs and tree lined forests. Oh yeah, we also missed the turn to Petaluma and headed to Santa Rosa instead. No big deal, we made the game in time.

This is California wine country. We rode through Napa Valley and Sonoma before we hit Highway 1, but there were several more wineries along the way. Here are some shots from the highway:
Tomales Bay

Forested road.

We arrived in the city at about 5:30; it took us another hour to get to AT&T Park. San Francisco rush hour traffic.

Out of the tunnel and approaching Golden Gate Bridge.

 San Francisco skyline.

On the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Bay Bridge just before the ballpark.

And here are some shots of  AT&T park as we get set to watch the Cubs take on the Giants:

 Approaching the park.

Willson Contreras warming up Kyle Hendricks.

Center field Videoboard.

 Sunset over the bay.

Our view of the field from the right field mezzanine.

 Statue of Willie Mays.

Large Coke bottle and mitt in left field.

The Cubs lost 2-1 in 11 innings. They wasted a stellar effort by Hendricks.

Favorite sign: Be at peace with your skin.
Favorite town name: Sebastopol, California.

2 ancient tractors on display.

Random observation from Randy: California's so big they have it to scale and still takes up two pages. I asked for an actual size map but they didn't have one.

Tomorrow: toward San Diego.
