The Baseball Trip 2018

Day 3   Wednesday, July 4th  2018

This drive is a slog. Four hundred and seventy miles from Wichita, Kansas to Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was supposed to end in Trinidad, Colorado, making the trip 150 miles shorter. But the game started at 5pm and there was no way in hell we were going to make it. But we had time to get up to Colorado Springs to see the SkySox take on the Ogden Raptors.

This drive is horrible, and the temperature rocketed over 100 again. Nothing but scrub land, soybeans, corn, tumbleweeds and slaughterhouses. I'm afraid I don't have much for you on this one.

Random observation from Randy: Those cows stand in their own poop all day and inhale that methane. You can't tell me that doesn't affect the way my steak tastes.

I mean, it could look like Lakin, Kansas:

Or it could look like Lamar, Colorado:

I did see something I've never seen before: A depot for windmill blades.

The SkySox are the Triple A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, but they used to belong to the Chicago White Sox (hence the name). But here's the kicker. As soon as we are turning into the parking lot at the stadium, a man puts down a sign that says "today's game sold out." Perfect end to this day.

Oh yeah, and then it poured. All night.

Favorite town name: Manzanola, Colorado
Favorite sign: Smoot's Creek

Ancient tractors on display - 2
Lawn Jockeys - 0

Women on riding mowers - 0
Shirtless men on riding mowers - 0

Oh hey: We did ride down Wyatt Earp Street in Dodge City. And we drove through the town where Doc Holiday was buried. So that's something.

Tomorrow: Grand Junction, Colorado
