Day 1 Monday, July 2, 201C
There are only two rules on the Baseball Trip: 1) No interstate highways and 2) no chain restaurants. The rest is up for grabs.
This is the trip.
Normally, we do not go west. If you are going west, there's not much out there except Denver. If you are going west, go all the way...that's right, California. We have gone west twice: Milwaukee - Minneapolis - St. Louis. Or Milwaukee - Minneapolis - Denver - Kansas City - St. Louis.
But this is the one.
We are barreling west towards San Francisco. It's going to take a while, but we will get there. Slide down to San Diego. We will be able to come back up to LA for Dodgers vs Angels; we'll see Dodgers vs. Angels in Dodger Stadium. Oh glory:Mike Trout and Dodger Stadium on the same night.
By we, I mean me and my navigator Randy. Not only is Randy an expert navigator, but he is also an astute observer of the human condition. We also count things, mostly signs of the apocalypse. This trip we are counting lawn jockeys and ancient tractors on display. Also, there is a competition between shirtless men on riding mowers vs, women on riding mowers.
In the meantime, we are wending our way through Illinois toward Iowa and Des Moines. Oh Lord, the irony...travelling through Iowa listening to Soft Cell and The Psychedelic Furs.
Random observation from Randy: I hate civilization.
Nonetheless, this uncivilized land is becoming a great big meh, another voyage of the Starship Corn and Soybeans.
But right now, it's on to Des Moines to see the Iowa Cubs vs the Memphis Cardinals. The Cardinals are at the top of the Pacific Coast League (Triple A) American South division. The Cubs are at the bottom of the Pacific Coast League American North division. This doesn't look good.
But the Cubs jump out to a 1-0 lead but relinquish soon. The Cardinals took a 7-3 lead and held on for a 7-5 win. Looks like the Cubs have spent their prospects: the club is on the major league field.

Bridge over the Des Moines River.
Outside Principal Park
Random observation from Randy: This road is quickly losing my interest.
Random observation from Randy: Can you imagine doing this in covered wagons?
Favorite city: Mingo, IA
Favorite signs: Sleeve Weasels Tattoos
Wolverine Street.
After the game, we arrive at a Hotel 6/Baymont that just suffered at tremendous flood. Bad things go happen. Also, trying to get out of Des Moines...do they have 5,000 events happening at once for the 4th of July?
Things we cannot stay for: Kirkwood, Illinois 50-50 Raffle
Ancient tractors on display - 3
Lawn jockeys - 2

I'll leave you with giant chicken:
