THE BASEBALL TRIP 2016

Day 3 - Wednesday, July 13.

This is more like it. Rolling hills turning into small mountains, cool drives where the trees bend over the road to shelter you from the sun. Broken farms, abandoned radio stations, Small towns with coffee shops and giant county courthouses and houses draping the hillside, hanging there, precarious, like they could fall into the river at any time. Towns like Albion, Avilla, and Auburn. Railroads and livestock and Amish furniture for sale and mountain roads filled with S-curves and hairpin turns.

We even had a good breakfast at Donna's Diner, in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Randy had a perogie-like dish with mashed potatoes wrapped in an omelet. Never saw that before.

 Downtown Sharon, PA.

Amish mom driving the buggy with her two girls in the back. You can't see them, but the girls both had looks on their faces that said, "Why can't we have a car?"

Oh no! There really is a Slippery Rock University! Before the dawn of ESPN/24 hour sports coverage, ABC used to spend an hour on Saturday afternoon rounding up all the national scores and highlights from the day in college football. We used to laugh because they would always remember to include the Slipper Rock score. I thought they were joking.
The West Gym at Slippery Rock.

 Favorite sign.

It was another 7-hour driving day, but we really didn't mind after all. We reached Penn National Racetrack at 7pm or so, just in time for the fifth race. Penn National is now owned by Hollywood Casinos, because people will go where the slot machines are.

Entrance gate, Penn National. Looks like any other casino.

Mist on the mountains behind the track.

Out of the gate.

We bet only three races and didn't do very well. So, what the heck, lets spend some time in the casino. The results were no better.

Favorite town names: Talkchalk, PA
                                      Frogtown, PA

I wanted to take a picture of this courthouse in Kittanning, PA, without getting out of the car...too much traffic behind me. And we couldn't really stop. But here it is:

Random observation from Randy: If I ran this town it would not have let anybody build a stupid apartment building that would ruin that view.

Tomorrow: NY
